It depends on the family goals, child and the type of education you are selecting for your child. It is important to know that you do not need to make the decision prior to Kindergarten. There are families who have had success with making the decisions further down the line like 6th grade or 9th grade. Please continually look in the resource section for more information to come. Montessori education has worked very well for our family. It is important to know that there are two different Montessori education accreditations, AMS and AMI. Montessori provides individualized learning, hands-on learning, child-led exploration, focus on practical life skills, and holistic development.

The answer to this is highly indidualized and depends on so many factors such as family goals, distance, cost, child’s needs, community and much more. Please look out in the resource section on how to determine your family’s education phillosophy.

You need to decide if your chid needs an “interventionist” or “homework helper”. If you are looking for a tutor to help your child advance beyond on-level math, then you will need to decide If your goal is for the child to “perform” versus to “learn”. This really depends on your goals and your current situation. This is an over $2 billion industry, and 30% of families do seek support from resources outside of those provided by the school. Parents who hire an independent counselor often start between the 8th and 10th grade to assist with course and activity selection. Those who hire a consultant later in high school are seeking assistance with college application strategy the admissions process.

Many of our children today need executive functional skills support to be successful in academic achievement. The greatest success comes when parents are working with their children on a daily basis. They are checking planners, helping with binder and locker organization, logging into learning management systems and if needed, hiring third party support.

It is hard to accept when your child is qualified and did not get into their school of choice. The offer of admission depends on so many variables that are not in our control. It could be the school needs more boys and they do not have a spot for your daughter, or maybe the number of qualified students exceeds the number of spots available. Remember, schools are not looking for a well rounded person but a well rounded class.
